Complexity in ERP?

Research from Panorama Consulting* shows that 46% of respondents selected their chosen ERP software because of best functional fit. There are so many options available to organisations looking for a new ERP/Business Management system, whether it’s a niche system, one of the well-established vendors, best-of-breed or a two-tier system, as well as different deployment options, such as cloud, on-premise or hosted. The Panorama study also showed that there is a trend for less customisation, as the wide choice of options allows many organisations to choose an “out-of-the-box” ERP/Business Management solution that provides the best functional fit.
Finding that solution can be quite a journey though. Every company is good at what they do and sees their business and business processes as “simple”, as it’s what they know and do every single day. However, that view isn’t always shared by every ERP vendor out there, as some ERP systems don’t handle certain processes easily or at all. This is when a company realises that their business is actually rather ‘complex’ to the outside world.
With the advance of the global market and multi-channel sales, more and more companies are having to manage complex pricing models for different markets and audiences. If there are complex pricing models, the chances are that there are also complex order, delivery or shipment management processes. Multi-company, multi-currency, multi-language and multi-legislation requirements can all create complexity as well.
Internal processes and organisational structures may have created ‘complexity’ over time too, where each business unit may have been able to create its own ways of working, and the advent of the new ERP/Business Management system could involve a lot of business process re-engineering.
